The Spirit of Jim Thompson lives on…

Sixty-seven years ago, Jim Thompson created the world-famous silk company that has become synonymous with Thai sophistication and design. Thompson was an avid traveler and explorer, an esthete and a collector of art, but he was also a man about town who was renowned for his cosmopolitan soirées in his legendary Bangkok home. Spirit, the new restaurant and bar by Jim Thompson, brings to life his keen sense of elegance and hospitality in a newly designed home and garden in the very heart of Bangkok. Every detail of the restaurant has been inspired by the life and spirit of Jim Thompson.

The Spirit of Taste

Elegance and discernment were the hallmarks of an evening at Jim Thompson’s home, and no place is that more visible than in the cuisine at Spirit. Chef Montri Virojnvechapant has created a gastronomic menu that showcases refined Thai flavors. The authentic recipes he has meticulously selected are rare and historic, but leave room for modern culinary innovation and presentation to shine through. Set menus are available at lunch and dinner to sample a selection of the restaurant’s finest dishes.

The Spirit of Design

The lush green tropical garden combined with ancient trees on the site lead to the covered patio space, offering guests a breath of fresh air in the urban jungle of Bangkok. Upon entering the restaurant, guests experience the interior woodwork, warm décor and Jim Thompson silk upholstery. This all reflects Jim’s inimitable eye for refined sophistication.

Spirit restaurant was architecturally designed by Boiffils Studio. Porcelain tableware was designed by Paul Heredia featuring patterns inspired by the shadows found in the gardens of Jim Thompson House.

The Spirit of Discovery

Jim Thompson was an intrepid traveler. He criss-crossed Southeast Asia, learning about different cultures, collecting antiques and cultivating contacts with weavers and other artisans. Endlessly curious and fiercely independent, he boarded trains, drove off into the unknown and enjoyed long, solitary walks in unfamiliar places, ever eager to discover cultural richness and diversity.

The Spirit of Hospitality

Jim Thompson was a gracious host who opened his home to a constant flow of guests whom he entertained night after night in his gorgeously appointed home. His parties were an eclectic mix of diplomats, artists, glamorous celebrities and unknowns from all backgrounds and all corners of the globe. As soon as they pass the gates leading to Spirit, guests find the same warm welcome, personal service and exacting attention to detail.
